ONE CHEER FOR KEIR

It's happening!

Terminally-aggrieved rightoids won't like this, but I think the recent deal agreed between Britain and France to help "stop the boats" is a good one.

Of course, any solution that depends upon the help of the French is less than ideal. Personally, I would solve this problem simply by imprisoning all migrants illegally crossing the channel and make their life here less than pleasant. But, given the parameters within which a "normie" politician like Starmer has to work -- namely protecting Britain's halo of "moral soft power" (an increasingly outdated asset in my view) -- the "one out one in" plan is quite a good one, because it targets the driver of the problem of illegal boat crossings, namely the incentive of the people employing the service.

Right now, someone paying a few thousand Euros to the illegal boat operators is guaranteed, in return, a safe place to stay in the UK and the almost certain prospect of continuing to live there (less than 10% are sent back, I believe) with all the welfare and other benefits that that entails .

Now, under the Starmer-Macron plan, somebody seeking to take advantage of the dubious services of the illegal boat operators will arrive in the UK and then be immediately sent back to France in exchange for the UK taking a so-called "genuine asylum" seeker, who hasn't chosen to use the boat service.

If this system is rigorously enforced, and expanded, as is clearly the government's intention, it should have the effect of totally collapsing the illegal trade in cross-Channel people smuggling, and be a major victory for the technocrats. Keir Starmer's political future probably depends on it, so it is certainly in his interests to ensure that it is a success.

If he is able to achieve a successful outcome with this plan, this will make the Labour Party objectively a far better choice than the Conservative Party and possibly even Reform UK for all those who so noisily claim to care about the issue of mass immigration. Too bad it has to depend on the French. That might be its Achilles' heel!
