The Kerch road and rail bridges linking Russia to the occupied province of Crimea have been badly damaged by an attack on Putin's 70th birthday. The road part of the bridge has collapsed into the sea while the rail part has suffered extensive damage after a fuel train was destroyed, leading to a major fire. This could take weeks to repair, even if repairs are allowed to proceed unhindered.
Analysis and speculation about the attack is still underway but it seems that the attack may have involved several devices, including a boat bomb of some kind.

In response, the Kremlin immediately introduced rationing in Crimea and promised to reopen the ferry link, which will now provide the next target for Ukrainian forces.
The attack makes the supply situation of the Kremlin forces in Kherson and the Crimea more difficult, although the land route to the North of the Sea of Azov is still under Kremlin control.
