From 読売新聞:
Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old unemployed former Maritime Self-Defense Force officer who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the shooting and death of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (67) during a street speech in the House of Councillors election in Nara City, had taken time off from his job in mid-April this year and had failed to return. Several homemade guns were found in his house, and the Nara Prefectural Police believe that preparations may have been underway from around this time, such as hand-crafting guns. He said he had not had any interaction with those around him recently, and the prefectural police are scrambling to find out the full extent of his motive.
Yamagami graduated from a prefectural high school, one of the leading preparatory schools in Nara Prefecture. According to a classmate, he had the impression that he was a typical "high school student," such as chatting with friends during recess. The graduation album contains a photo of a smiling face and shows his weight at birth [3210g]. As for his future, he wrote, "I don't know."
After graduating from high school in 1999, Yamagami joined the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in 2003-2005. It is believed that he gained knowledge about guns around this time.
From October 2020 to May this year, he worked as a temporary employee at a factory in Kyoto Prefecture, carrying warehouse luggage with a forklift. According to factory officials, he was serious and had no trouble, but he spoke little and had little interaction with colleagues. Around the middle of April, he stopped coming to work because he was "unwell," and then resigned at his own volition. At the time, he reportedly said, "I haven't decided on my next job.
A former colleague of his, a man in his 50s, said: "At lunchtime, while everyone else was going to the cafeteria, he was always eating alone in his car, and I was wondering if he was having a hard time building relationships."
Yamagami's parents' home is in Nara City, where he lived with his mother, brother and sister. His father is said to have died.
At the time of the incident, he was living alone in an apartment in the same city about 3 kilometers away from the scene.
