THE NOVEMBER CLIFF EDGE

Republican Senators and Members of Congress up for election this November are in a real dilemma. They can't yet dump Trump, the main cause of their unpopularity, as that would alienate the shrinking MAGA base that they are all relying on for a big chunk of their vote. But they also know that sticking to Trump means that they have zero chance of winning over independents.

Ironically, this lame-duck loyalty that so many Republicans still have for the worst President ever is driven by how much Trump is generally hated. Any GOP candidate attempting to step away from the dumpster fire that Donald so blatantly is knows that he will have to go through a long process of political purification with the voters before independents would even think of giving him a chance.

So the "smarter" move—or, more correctly, the less dumb one—is to stay onside with the idiot MAGA base, who will, of course, eventually move away from Trump anyway, but not for some time.

This and this alone is the reason that the GOP appears to be holding together, with hardly anyone in the party challenging Trump directly. But the GOP is holding together in the same way that people in a car about to crash hold on tight just before impact.

Make no mistake about it, the November elections are a cliff edge, and the GOP is a car with a locked steering-wheel on a one-way, white-knuckle ride to oblivion.

The sad thing for Trump is that he even had a chance of not losing badly if he hadn't started a stupid inflationary war with Iran.

His only hope is that he can force a settlement on Iran and then economic conditions suddenly improve—just in time.

He can't and they won't.

The Iranians intend to twist the knife, as they want to see Trump humiliated, and the month or two before the Midterms is definitely the time to do it. It is not impossible that they may agree to another "deal," but as soon as Trump's numbers improve, they will simply pull the rug again.

The chances of the GOP driving off a cliff in November and landing in a burning heap of twisted metal just keep getting bigger.
