BRITAIN TO SUSPICIOUSLY GIVE AWAY TERRITORY TO A THIRD-WORLD NATION FOR "NO REASON AT ALL"

Mad Liz!

The UK, which is now led by an ethnic Indian, is ironically planning to retreat from its only remaining Indian Ocean territory, namely the Chagos Islands, following a British presence that lasted centuries.

The only remnant of Britain's once dominant position in the area will be the retention of the single island of Diego Garcia, home to a massive US naval base. This is because the Americans have ordered the UK to retain "sovereignty" so that they can continue leasing the island for the Yank navy.

Meanwhile, the other 70 or so islands in the group will simply be handed over to Mauritius, a former UK colony several thousands of kilometres away that is inhabited mainly by Indians, whom Britain settled there in the 19th and 20th centuries and then granted independence to in 1968.

In 1992 the Mauritians showed how "grateful" they were for everything Britain did for them by voting to get rid of Queen Elizabeth II as the symbolic head of state.

According to the BBC, Britain's Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said he wanted to "resolve all outstanding issues" over the archipelago:

In a written ministerial statement, Mr Cleverly announced: "The UK and Mauritius have agreed to engage in constructive negotiations, with a view to arriving at an agreement by early next year.

"Taking into account relevant legal proceedings, it is our intention to secure an agreement on the basis of international law to resolve all outstanding issues, including those relating to the former inhabitants of the Chagos Archipelago."

The foreign secretary confirmed the negotiations would include "the exercise of sovereignty".

This is basically BBC-speak for a humiliating transfer of territory to a Third World country that has no more claim to the islands than a coconut floating by. The decision to throw away another British colony was made by Liz Truss, during her chaotic time as Prime Minister:

The move follows talks between Liz Truss, during her short time as prime minister, and Mauritian leader Pravind Jugnauth at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.

The sea area around the islands, the Chagos Marine Protected Area, encompasses 640,000 square kilometres (250,000 sq mi) of ocean waters, an area twice as large as the British Isles.

My guess is that once the islands are handed over to Mauritius, vast deposits of oil and natural gas will be "discovered," which will then be extracted at great profit by multinational oil companies which will bribe the Mauritian government to set minimal tax rates. Some of Liz Truss's capitalist friends may get a piece of the action, which would at least provide some logic to her apparently insane actions.
