Following the second round of the French legislative elections, it looks like a deal by Macron's Centrist "Ensemble" group and the hard Left "New Popular Front" to combine their votes in certain areas has greatly reduced the impact of the National Rally (NR) vote.
In the first round of the election, held last week, National Rally had the biggest vote share, and was on course to be the biggest party in the French Legislative Assembly. However, an exit poll for the second round of voting has revealed that the NR is now in third place, and is expected to end up with only 115 to 150 seats.
Put in a British context, this would be like Britain's Centrist Conservative party teaming up with an extreme leftist, like Jeremy Corbyn, to prevent Nigel Farage making a breakthrough, with the added side effect of Corbyn becoming the dominant partner.
Put in an American context, it would be like the Democratic Party teaming with Black Lives Matter to stop the Republican Party, but with BLM having more Congressmen than the Democrats.
A recipe for political stability it is not!
