A prominent Russian shill who was even too Putin-friendly for Unz Review! Some months before the Russian invasion of the Ukraine in 2022, Karlin parted ways with Unz despite being one of their most prominent contributors. Possibly this was a way to "disassociate" the Unz Review from actual Russians so that it could perform its own Russian shilling more efficiently.
Karlin was born in Russia in 1988. His family appears to be of Jewish origin, as Karlin is a surname that traces back to the Hasidic dynasty originating with Rebbe Aaron the Great of Karlin in present-day Belarus. This adds an interesting "nuance" to his rabid Russian nationalism. Karlin moved to England as a child in the 1990s, and then to the US, until he finally moved back to Russia in 2016.
Before the rise of the Alt-Right, he espoused relatively liberal views in his blogs but became increasingly traditionalist, anti-gay, and pro-White, in a curve that eerily echoed the propaganda efforts of the Kremlin and their realisation that Alt-Right ideas could be weaponised against the Western establishment. Karlin frequently tries to push edgy and sometimes oddball "takes" on such matters as global warming, rape, and the age of sexual consent, which in itself is not a bad thing, although due to his synergy with the Russian government all his views can be considered suspect or at least tainted with insincerity.
