A politician who used his career to crash demographics in a country full of old people, has been shot to death.
The politician, Shinzo Abe, aged 67, was making a speech in the city of Nara to support a candidate for his Neo-Liberal political party, when a man using a homemade shotgun blasted him from behind.
During his time as Prime Minister from 2012 to 2020, female participation in the workforce rose sharply thanks to repressive laws that forced companies to hire more women and changes in the tax code that penalised stay-at-home mums. This was despite the country having the most aged population in the world and a catastrophically low fertility rate:
The politician, who lay bleeding on the street and finally died in hospital, also oversaw a marked increase in mass immigration, a phenomenon that is also thought to depress female fertility by creating a low-trust society.
The motive of the shooter remains unclear, but there is a more than even chance that he was an incel whose failure to get married may be related to Abe's Neo-Liberal reforms.
