Lipton Matthews talks to Professor Jon Davidann to discuss the life of Yukichi Fukazawa (the guy on the ¥10,000 note). Davidann makes the case that the "Westernization" that Fukuzawa promoted succeeded because it also rejected elements of Western culture and "Japanified" the process. He further claims that the work or the apparent "liberal reformer" also laid the groundwork for later Japanese Imperialism.
