In 1956, if things had gone differently, Britain and France could have triumphed over Nasser’s Egypt. In 2026, Donald Trump may still get lucky and defeat the Iranian mullahs, but if he doesn’t, the Iranian War may well turn into “America’s Suez,” a defining moment in which the weaknesses of the American Empire—from poor leadership to an extremely low pain threshold—will be woefully exposed.
